A Tour of the Deck

Provident's decks are wide and spacious, and surrounded by high, solid bulwarks and capping rail, so she feels very safe and protected. Aft is the helm, from where the boat is steered. Though built with a tiller, she now has a wheel, so is much easier to handle. Most people like to have a turn at helming during the week, with the crew at hand to keep you right. Just ahead of the helm is the Mizzen mast, with the mizzen sheets and halyards coming down to the pinrails on either side.

Ahead of the mizzen is the crew cabin hatch, with steps down into the crew cabin. Forward of this is the dog house, which contains the chart table, and the main access to the accommodation. Ahead of the dog house is the main saloon hatch, which supplies light and ventilation to the main saloon. The dinghy is stored on top of this hatch on a strong wooden cradle when at sea.

Next comes the main mast, and again the ropes used to set it, and the topsail that sets above it, come down to the pinrails on either side. Ahead of the mainmast is the forward companionway, used to reach the forward part of the accommodation area, and ahead of this is the anchor windlass, now hydraulically powered.

A Tour of the Accommodation

From the deck, the main entrance brings you into the doghouse. This contains the chart table and navigation equipment, and has windows on either side. It is a great place to sit in poor weather, and the windows on either side give a good view out.

Descending from the dog house brings you into the main saloon, with the galley to port and wet locker to starboard. The Galley is equipped with a gas fired commercial range, fridge, freezer, and sinks with hot running water.

The saloon is the heart of the boat, and is where everybodySailing Holidays aboard Provident eats together.

The large table can seat 17 people (or more at a squeeze), but can be folded back during the day to allow easy access through the accommodation. Aft of the saloon on either side are twin cabins. On the starboard side of the saloon are two bunks. Forward of the saloon are two heads and a shower cubicle, each with hot running water, to starboard, and a twin cabin to port. Forward of this, in the bows, is a four berth cabin. Provident carries two tonnes of fresh water, so staying clean and comfortable is not a problem. Hot water is provided by the generator, which also powers the 240v ring main. This is live for about three hours each day, and can be used to charge phones, shavers, video cameras etc.
